The Makeup Journey - Part 2

Oh my gosh, this is so much fun!

So far, I have had two lessons and one crazy shopping spree at Ulta -- and I am having a blast!

A little bit of a recap for those who are just now joining us: I haven’t worn makeup in years. Since before Covid. Something about makeup made me feel older. It made my eyes look more sunken and my lips even smaller. Of course it did! I was applying it the same way I did when I was 20 – and my late 50s skin wasn’t having any of that nonsense.

So, I decided to sign up for makeup lessons with the fabulous Michelle Montes Makeup Artistry.

And now you’re caught up. (You can read Part 1 here)

At our first session together, we looked through my existing makeup drawer, mostly consisting of a lot of Clinique “free gift with purchase” palettes that were in all the wrong colors. Not only that, but most of them were old. I’m talking pre-Covid old. I didn’t want to think about the bacteria that had built up over time. I dumped it all. Yes, all of it! I had a hard time parting with my nude lipstick, but I am trusting the process. Begrudgingly. I love that nude lipstick.

Once we completed our “out with the old” step, it was time to venture forth into “in with the new.”

At Ulta, we bought eyeliner, mascara, cream eyeshadow, powder eyeshadow, baked blush/bronzer, concealer, foundation, lipstick, brushes, and more. Even an eyebrow brush. Really? Eyebrows? What have I gotten myself into?

We also bought microfiber washcloths and Micellar water. Wow! Where have these two things been all my life??? Taking off my makeup is so easy now. No harsh astringents. No textured washcloths. My skin feels so fresh at the end of the day. Seriously, I love this stuff. Absolute genius.

Not surprisingly, the most difficult purchase for me was lip color. I am not a fan of my lips. They are getting thinner by the minute, and I don’t like to call attention to them if I can avoid it. But Michelle is the expert, and I am putting my trust in her expertise. Begrudgingly.

I settled on Mac SOAR. Personally, I think SOAR is a terrible name for a lipstick. Cold sore anyone? If you ask about my lipstick, expect me to spell it for you Every. Single. Time.  The Macximal Matte stick is a little too matte for my liking, but the color is growing on me – and Michelle has ideas for a little more moisture and shine. I am eagerly awaiting our next lesson.

Speaking of which, I’ll post again soon about our first couple of lessons where I actually did some of my own makeup. I LOVE the direction we’re headed, and have found a few opportunities to try it out in the real world. I am happy to say that Michelle’s mission worked! No one said “I love your makeup.” Instead they just said “You look amazing!” Can’t beat that.

More soon.

This is brilliant! And so fun to follow. I look forward to part 3.

(BTW, I had a client who owned a day spa and had her own line of products. With her help, I did a similar purge at 40 and again at 50. No Clinique anywhere! ;-) )
